graphite forms in metamorphic rock. alteration gives birth to this popular g[r]ayness. the million tones in-between are a result of [perhaps?] millennia in slate and schist. i’m not a geologist, just a drawer. and i keep my graphite tucked away in sheaths of prismatic wood, hexagonal, ergonomic until shaven to the inch. i’m pulling the pencils out again this spring.

thank you, graphite.
